How to Make Fountains for Home?

A fountain doesn’t have to be a costly store-bought affair to give added appeal to a backyard, porch or even indoor space. If you are making fountains for home, you can go as small or large as your budget, space and time allow, but the same principles apply for any size; just make sure you get the appropriate pump for the amount of water you need to circulate. Once you have your fountain up and running, step it up a notch and add water plants and fish for an exotic fountain garden.

Steps for Making Fountains for Home

Check the underside of the chosen ceramic dish or pot. If there is a drainage hole — common in pots meant for plants — seal it up with silicone sealant before proceeding, following the instructions that come with the sealant for drying time. Place the pot in the desired location of the fountain.

Set the pump on the bottom of the dish or pot. Run the electrical cord over the back of the pot so that it is out of sight, and attach the pump hose to the hose nozzle. Switch the power toggle to “on,” but do not plug the pump in yet.

Cover the bottom of the fountain with river stones until the rocks obscure the pump. The pump hose should come up smoothly through the stones in the center of the pot. You can fill the pot nearly to the top with stones or leave them just at the bottom, as desired.

Trim the pump hose with scissors so that it is just above the height of the pot rim. Attach the fountain nozzle to the end of the hose. Most pump hosing is quite stiff and can stand upright supporting the weight of the nozzle. If the hose is not standing, however, support it with a bit of wire so that it is upright.

Fill the pot with water to just below the rim. Plug the pump into the power source and turn the power on. The pump will circulate the water up through the hose and out the fountain nozzle. Fountains for home can be made without great expense and offer you the chance to exercise your creativity by adding lights and other accents.
