Prairie Style – The Prairie Style featured a low-pitched roof that was hipped with distinctively overhanging eaves. The details of the homes focus on the horizontal planes throughout the design. The floor plans were spread out over the entire plot, further emphasizing the horizontal nature of the homes. It was extremely common to have large, square porch supports at the front entrance of the house. This style was made especially popular by Frank Lloyd Wright in the United States.

Craftsman Style – The Craftsman or Arts and Crafts style was more decorative than the Prairie Style. The roof was also low-pitched with wide overhanging eaves, but it was gabled. The roof rafters added to the decor of the home as they were exposed, with decorative braces or beams under the gables. The porch supports were prominent, squared and slanting inward. This style was known as the Craftsman style as it was focused on details and was always involved with the creation of beautiful pieces of furniture from that period.

Ranch Style – The Ranch Style home was a single story home with a horizontal emphasis. The floor plan was open, long and narrow. The shape of these homes was either L-shaped, U-shaped or simply rectangular. The roof was gabled and low-pitched. Overall, the style was based on simplicity and not decoration.

International Style – This is the style that stands out most for the Modern period. Dating from 1920 through the 1950s, the focus of the International Style was on clean lines and simplicity. The roof was flat, the windows were in metal casements set flush to the exterior of the wall, and the facades were normally asymmetrical. The doors and windows were kept free of any type of decorative detail, and the wall surfaces were similarly unornamented. This style was made popular by the European architects Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe and Walter Gropius. The lack of ornamentation and the simplicity of the open floor plans became famous markers of this style.

Modern, or contemporary, decorating is associated with clean, sleek lines. Many furnishings and accessories are geometric and interesting. Modern style house is utilitarian but also light — combining glass, chrome and wood for a polished look. The modern look is minimalist compared to other styles; it leans toward having less, and it uses open space as a decorative element.
